Jan-Michael Cart has create a concept for iOS 5 that shows how Apple should allow for widgets on the home screens. The idea reveals home screens to the left of the main screen. Normally when swiping that way, you simply get the search function. This concept adds more screens to the left allowing widgets to be installed on one side while keeping all the apps grouped to the right of the search screen as demonstrated in the image below:
Although Apple will probably introduce widgets another way, Jan-Michael certainly has an idea that could work well when iOS 5 is released.

We have been hearing reports that Apple will be launching better notifications along with widgets in iOS 5. The iOS 5 release date is not currently known although some are hinting at a September launch with an unveiling at WWDC that is running shortly.
