As users got the new iPhone in hand, they began to find issues, many complaining about reception and screen issues. Some new owners are claiming there is a yellow discoloration in the screen while others are seeing white spots. It also appears that some of the new iPhone 4s came off the assembly line with reversed volume buttons. It has been reported that the button with the “—” icon increased volume, while the button with the ‘+’ icon reduced it.
The most widely reported issue is the reception – or lack thereof. New owners are complaining that if they hold the phone a certain way they are experiencing reduced call reception.
The new iPhone 4.0 design put the antennae through a metal band around the edges of the phone, making it 25% thinner than its most recent predecessor. The drawback to this, however, is that the antennae is now in a place that some may hold the phone.
Apple addressed the reception issue in a written statement:
“Gripping any phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas. This is a fact of life for every wireless phone. If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases.”
Steve Jobs, replying to an email regarding the complaint said, “Just avoid holding it in that way.”
The iPhone 4.0 estimated total sales for the launch are 1 to 1.5 million. If this estimate is correct, this would be the biggest iPhone launch — the 3GS launch peaked at 1 million.
